Symptoms of Car Ignition Issues

Whether you have a truck, mid-sized SUV or a sports car, issues can come up, including ignition issues. But how can you know you have a car ignition issue? What are symptoms of car ignition issues? Our company (https://www.fairportnylocksmith.com) has put together some information because we want to make it easier for you to identify certain issues that might occur. Keep reading for more information!

Let’s start with identifying the ignition cylinder. What is it?
When someone references the ignition lock cylinder, they are referring to the key and cylindrical tumbler. What is the significance of the ignition lock cylinder? It is important because it makes the vehicle start. Some cars have a push start, but ignition lock cylinders are still the norm.

Now let’s explain how an ignition lock cylinder works…
You might be wondering how an ignition lock cylinder works. This is a component which operates in different positions – there are four positions. The first position is the one that works to unlock your wheel. The second position is the one that makes the accessories power on. The third position is what causes the computer to start up and the fuel system. Then there is the last position – position four – which is the one that starts the engine. Now that you understand how an ignition cylinder works, you can see that an ignition cylinder issue can leave you with the inability to start your car. Of course, this can be a huge problem.
Now that you have a background on what the ignition lock cylinder is and how it works, and why it is important, let’s dive into symptoms of car ignition problems…

The car will not start. If your vehicle is failing to start up as you need and want it to, we recommend that you check the battery to make sure it is not dead. Often times, this causes a car not to start. But if you have seen that it is not the battery that is the problem, you might want to consider the ignition lock cylinder. This part is linked to the electronic ignition switch, and if things are not properly working, you won’t be able to start your car. The car not starting is just one potential sign of an ignition problem with your car.

The key won’t turn at all. If a key is not turning, then there might be an issue with the ignition cylinder. Whether you can’t remove your key because it is jammed, or you just can’t move it at all, even to turn it, there could be a problem resulting from age, debris inside, or wear and tear.

The starter motor is stuck or it is not creating any noise. If this is the case, you will notice that when you turn the key, nothing happens. In this case, it could be that there is an inability to create an electric path to receive power to the starter motor (from the battery). Assuming that you already checked to make sure the battery is not dead, it is a good idea to see if other parts are working, like windows or the radio.

There is no power to the car. If you can’t power on your vehicle when you turn the ignition lock cylinder, maybe it is worn. Try all four positions when you turn the key, and make note if any of them work. If any do not work, maybe there is an ignition cylinder issue.

The vehicle is stalling. Of course, when you turn your key in the ignition, the car should start without an issue. But if this does not happen and the car instead stalls or it stalls when you start driving, or in another scenario, you might have to keep trying to start the car, it is good to check for an ignition cylinder issue. Of course, always check the battery first!

There could be something clogging the ignition cylinder. You will want to take a look to see if there is any debris in the ignition cylinder. If the key tumbler keeps getting stuck then we recommend trying to use pressurized air to clean it out, or using something small in size and soft like a q-tip. Another option to try is WD-40.

The dashboard lights have turned on. What does your dash look like? Are lights on that shouldn’t be on? Do you notice the lights come on and off? This might be an ignition issue.

The steering wheel is stuck, won’t turn, or otherwise jammed. This could also point to the ignition as the culprit.
